How to Choose the Right Sewing Needle
The secret to better stitches is matching the needle to your fabric, thread and technique. A fine, sharp point glides through tightly woven cottons and silks; a ball point protects stretch fabrics; a strong, larger size handles denim, canvas and upholstery without skipped stitches. If you’re hand sewing, look for a comfortable length and an eye that suits your thread weight. Machine sewists should align needle size to thread thickness and fabric density, swapping needles regularly to maintain crisp, balanced stitches and reduce puckering.

FAQ's
How to know what sewing needle to use?
Start with your fabric + thread + stitch:
• Wovens (cotton, linen, poplin): Universal or Microtex in 70/10–80/12 for fine to midweight; 90/14 when thicker or using dense stitches.
• Knits & stretch (jersey, rib, swim): Ballpoint/Stretch in 75/11–80/12 to prevent snags and skipped stitches.
• Denim, canvas, twill: Jeans/Denim 90/14–100/16 for penetration and durability.
• Embroidery & quilting: Embroidery or Quilting needles (usually 75/11–90/14) with a polished, slightly larger eye to protect thread.
• Leather & vinyl: Leather needle (chisel point) in 90/14–100/16 for clean, precise holes.
Quick checks: if you see skipped stitches, puckering, fraying or thread breaks, switch needle type or move up a size. And replace needles every 6–8 hours of sewing (or at the start of each new project) to keep stitches crisp.
Do any needles fit all sewing machines?
Not quite. While many domestic machines accept the standard 130/705 H household needle, some equipment needs a specific system (e.g., ELx705 for certain coverstitch/overlocker models; various systems for industrial machines). Twin and specialty needles also require a compatible needle plate and stitch settings. When in doubt, check your manual or ask us.
