Important Information - Warehouse Move
To all our customers, we are moving our warehouse from Morwell in Victoria to Sunshine West in Greater Melbourne. This move will commence on the 25th September and take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete. During this time we will not be shipping orders.
Therefore, deadline for shipping prior to our move is 12 noon (AEST) on Wednesday the 24th September. Orders after this time will be shipped as soon as our move is complete. We appreciate your patience during this time, we will be working extra hard to complete ahead of time, and have employed extra staff for the move.
During the move, please also watch out for emails from us, as I will be pushing through a few extra specials also.
If you’ve been looking for a relaxing, screen-free hobby, cross stitch kits for beginners are a perfect place to start. They include everything you need, the patterns are simple to follow, and you’ll finish with something you’re proud to display or gift. In this guide, we’ll show you how to choose the right kit, what supplies you’ll need, and the easiest first projects—plus a few adorable beginner-friendly kits you can stitch this weekend.
For your first stitch project, simplicity and clarity matter more than size. Look for:
• All-in-one kits: Pattern, pre-cut fabric, needles, and threads included.
• Clear charts & symbols: High-contrast patterns with an easy legend.
• Beginner-friendly fabric count: 11–14 count Aida makes it easy to see each square.
• Limited colour palette: Fewer shades = faster progress and less confusion.
• Small to medium designs: Quick wins keep motivation high.
At JM Embroideries, our beginner cross stitch kits are selected for clarity and comfort—so your first experience is calm, creative, and confidence-building.
Nature-inspired designs are perfect because they look great even with simple shapes and limited colours. Try these beginner-friendly favourites and we’ll link them directly from the blog:
Feather Cross Stitch Kit — light colour gradients introduce simple shading without being overwhelming.
Prefer something bright and playful? Fruit themes are beginner gold—bold blocks of colour, clean edges, and instant satisfaction.
Watermelon Cross Stitch Kit — chunky colour fills and minimal backstitch; a fun way to practise tidy crosses.
“Small and done” beats “big and half-stitched.” Mini kits help you master counting, tension, and colour changes fast—without a months-long commitment. Our Panda and Bug Mini Cross Stitch Kits are a popular first step because you’ll experience the entire stitch workflow—starting, stitching, finishing, and framing—on a tiny, friendly canvas.
1. Open your kit and organise. Lay out the chart, Aida fabric, needle, and threads. Separate thread colours and secure them on a thread card or bobbins.
2. Find the centre. Fold your Aida into quarters to locate the middle hole; start near the centre of the pattern to keep your design balanced.
3. Stitch the X. Bring needle up at bottom-left, down at top-right (/) and then up at bottom-right, down at top-left () to complete each cross. Keep all top stitches slanting the same way for a neat finish.
4. Work in small colour sections. Fewer thread changes = fewer tangles and mistakes.
5. Backstitch last. Outline details at the end; it sharpens edges and makes your design pop.
6. Finish & frame. Gently wash, press face-down on a soft towel, and frame behind glass or in a hoop.
• Fabric: 14-count Aida is the sweet spot for visibility and detail.
• Thread: Use the stranded cotton included in your kit; most patterns use 2 strands for X’s and 1 strand for backstitch.
• Accessories: A simple 6–8″ embroidery hoop keeps tension even and your stitches tidy.
